Police inaugurate website to check bribery, indiscipline
The Nigeria Police Command has inaugurated a website, www.stopthebribes.net, as part of measures to stop bribery and other forms of indiscipline in the Force.
The Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, who launched the operation in Abuja on Monday, explained that members of the public can lodge complaints against observed violations by policemen through the website, but appealed that such “complaints should be factual and be supported with pictures or other evidence.”
The IG stated that the vehicles had been customized for each state, to provide safety on the highway and improve the operational efficiency of the police.
According to him, the highway patrol teams would provide assistance to travellers with broken down vehicles and accident victims.
He added that special code numbers would be inscribed on each vehicle with facilities to monitor their deployment, adding that the special squad trained to man the vehicles were not permitted to cross their designated areas of surveillance.
To ensure that the officers do not abuse the privilege, Arase explained that “dry ration and enough water” would be provided for each patrol team, assuring of prompt payment of their allowances and other entitlements.
He said, “The time now has come to change our mindset and realign our policing strategies. The world, they say, is changing. We as police officers must change with it. Road blocks represent our analogue past.
“The new scheme tagged ‘The Safer Highway Patrol’ is an alternative to road blocks. It will ensure the deployment of patrol vehicles along major highways across the country and at points considered as high-security risk where road blocks were hitherto mounted as a deterrent to criminal elements.”
Arase said the Force would collaborate with the Federal Road Safety Corps with a view to securing authorised access to its Motor Vehicle License Database to support the crime detection functions of the Force.
