Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Finance Minister receives honorary doctorate from Yale University

Nigeria’s Ministry of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has received an honorary doctorate degree from the prestigious Yale University in Connecticut, US.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala named a Doctor of Humane Letters on Monday, May 18, 2015 during Yale's Commencement ceremony.

On its website, Yale wrote about the minister saying:

“You are a citizen of your country, your continent, and the world. Shaped by challenging experiences during your childhood in Nigeria, you have made social and economic reform your mission.”

“As Nigeria’s coordinating minister of economic development and minister of finance, you have tackled corruption, created a vision and path to long-term economic stability, and worked to build a culture of transparency.”

“At the World Bank, you made food security a priority and provided policy advice and capital for the world’s poorest countries.”

“With wisdom, a fierce dedication to doing what is right, and unflagging energy, you have transformed the economic landscape of your nation.”

“We are proud to name you Doctor of Humane Letters.”

Also honoured with a doctorate was Beninoise singer, Angelique Kidjo, who was described as “one of the world’s great voices for Africa” and named a Doctor of Music.

The Fleeting Nature of Time

As I scrolled through the faded photograph, the faces of my former classmates stared back at me - a relic from a time long passed. There was Ms. Sola, our teacher, standing resolute in the center, her stern gaze commanding our rapt attention. And there were the familiar names, each one a thread in the tapestry of my youth: Sharon, Delani, Kola, Hazumo, Gafar, Ibrahim the drummer boy, Moji, Sijibomi, Damilola, Esther, Moses, Bimbo, and of course, my own humble self. 1. Independence Burundi got its independence from Belgium in 1962. However since the time of independence, Burundi has been plagued by tension between the usually-dominant Tutsi minority and the Hutu majority.
